The chief executives of three major pharmaceutical companies are set to appear in front of the Senate health committee on Thursday to defend how much they charge for drugs in the United States, drawing them further into a confrontation with lawmakers and the Biden administration over the cost of some of the most widely used prescription medications. The three executives scheduled to testify — Joaquin Duato of Johnson & Johnson, Robert M. Davis of Merck and Christopher Boerner of Bristol Myers Squibb — are expected to clash with the health committee’s chairman, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent who has made reining in drug prices a signature cause of his late-career years in Congress. Mr. Sanders plans to focus the hearing on why drug prices are higher in the United States than in other wealthy countries. His staff has singled out several widely used drugs, including Eliquis, a blood thinner made by Bristol Myers Squibb, and Januvia, a diabetes drug from Merck, that can be bought for much less in Canada and Europe than in the United States.

Opinion | Analyzing Bernie Sanders’s Vision for Mideast Peace

To the Editor:Re “Palestinians Must Have Hope for a Brighter Future,” by Bernie Sanders (Opinion guest essay, Nov. 23):Senator Sanders states what has been obvious for decades to all who support two states living in peace, prosperity and dignity: The violence must end. In this long struggle, extremists on both sides scuttle every hope for compromise and ensure the endless cycle of murder and retaliation. The U.S. can pressure Israel by curtailing or attaching conditions to aid. Senator Sanders and other peace-loving Americans must call on those Arab states that support Palestinian extremists to end their support and work toward genuine transformation. I support Senator Sanders’s vision, but he doesn’t propose a concrete path forward, without which nothing will change.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Legislative casualties of U.S. Congress’s budget fight are emerging. His caving to extreme members of the party augurs poorly for measures like Ukraine aid and cannabis banking. Republicans including Representative Matt Gaetz and Representative Andy Biggs have already denied calls for new Ukraine aid. By siding with further-right members, McCarthy gives them more power to hold the line.

Cazoo’s debt fix points to bumpy ride

That’s not the fate of shareholders in UK-based and U.S.-listed Cazoo (CZOO.N), which has just announced a brutal debt restructuring. Under the deal announced on Wednesday, bondholders will swap $630 million of convertible notes for $200 million of fresh debt and a large slug of the equity. The debt cut will do little to fix Cazoo’s rickety engine. Although the company had 195 million pounds of cash at the end of June, it burnt through over 50 million pounds in the previous six months. And revenue this year is expected to fall nearly 40%, as customers racked by high interest rates tighten their belts.

Pearson’s pricey CEO will rile shareholders

LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Pearson (PSON.L) is baiting shareholders with its choice of new CEO. The 57-year-old will receive 13 million pounds’ worth of cash and restricted shares on top of his normal pay as compensation for leaving Microsoft. Such generosity is questionable considering that in April nearly half of the London-listed company’s shareholders voted against a pay package of more than 8 million pounds for Bird. Despite its greater digital focus, Pearson’s revenue is expected to flatline over the next three years, LSEG forecasts show. Disney’s theme parks reveal shrunken treasure

Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Bob Iger can’t get off the roller coaster. Walt Disney’s (DIS.N) chief executive plans to double the Magic Kingdom’s investment in theme parks and other experiences to $60 billion over the course of about 10 years. On the other, Disney’s dwindling cash and the increasing demands for it is cause for concern. One issue is that Disney’s free cash flow has plummeted. No wonder adding theme parks to the list is making shareholders skittish.

UK annual inflation fell to 6.7% in August, from 6.8% in July, confounding market expectations of a rise to 7%. Domestic disinflationary forces offset a nearly 30% rise in oil prices to bring headline inflation to the lowest level since February 2022. Higher petrol prices did add around 0.3 percentage points to the consumer price index, according to Capital Economics.

Bernie Sanders’s push for four-day weeks has merit

Senator Bernie Sanders speaks to the crowd as United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and UAW Region 1 Director LaShawn English listen during a rally in support of striking UAW members in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., September 15, 2023. The United Auto Workers on Friday began strikes at Detroit carmakers Ford Motor (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Sanders voiced enthusiasm for their biggest demand: moving to a four-day workweek while maintaining five-day pay. UAW members pushed for this policy in the middle of the last century during a prior wave of automation. With artificial intelligence poised to reshape white-collar jobs, more workers might come to see things Sanders’s way.
